Enoshima Iwaya — First Cave — Part 1

The path leads toward the First Cave of Enoshima Iwaya. From Ryugu Shrine and the Lovers' Bell, the trail slopes downward, and soon a steep staircase appears. I remind myself not to slip and take each step carefully.

At the bottom, a sign with a red arrow and the word “Welcome” stands quietly. Seeing the arrow pointing toward the caves makes me strangely happy, and I continue downward.

Another steep staircase follows. From here, the sea comes into view, and below I can see a small restaurant called Miharashitei. It is early morning and still closed, but it looks like a place with a beautiful view. Enoshima is famous for shirasu, and the thought crosses my mind as I keep descending.

The sea opens wide before me. Katase Enoshima Beach stretches out in a long curve. Beautiful. Mount Fuji is visible in the distance. I stand for a moment, simply watching the morning light on the water.

Further down, I reach Chigogafuchi. The sign tells the sad story of a young acolyte named Shiragiku, who leapt from these rocks. Yet it is also known as a place of stunning sunsets and a favorite spot for fishermen. I look out at the sea glowing in the morning sun and let the thoughts drift through me.

The stone steps continue, and soon the Iwaya Bridge appears with its red railings on both sides. To the right, the coastline shines under the morning sun.

The bridge curves to the left, and I feel a small excitement, wondering what scenery waits beyond. Orange morning light slips between the rocks on the left and blends with the red railings. The sight is indescribably beautiful, and I take a photo. A few fishermen are already casting their lines.

Crossing the bridge, the red railings glow in the sunlight. To the right, the clear blue sky, the sea of Katase Enoshima, and Mount Fuji line up in a perfect view. It is a beauty beyond words. I feel deeply that I have come to a truly special place and continue toward the First Cave.

When I arrive, it is still before opening hours, so I turn back for a moment. And there it is again, an even wider view. Under the clear blue sky, the red railings, the orange morning light, the sea, and Mount Fuji. A perfect scene for a photograph. I stand there for a while, simply taking it in. And take another photo.

By this point, I feel as if I have already received more than enough beauty for one morning. Walking through the cold air from early dawn was worth it. Perhaps I came here just for this moment. The caves are still closed, so I decide to wait around this area. The sea wind is cold. But the sunlight is warm, and my body is warm from walking. I cannot explain it well, but one thing is certain. It is breathtakingly beautiful.

And before I even enter the First Cave, this chapter of the journey comes to an end. The rest will begin next time, from the moment I step toward the cave.

江の島岩屋 第一岩屋 ― Part 1

ここからは江の島岩屋の第一岩屋へ向かう。 龍宮と龍恋の鐘から岩屋方面へ歩いていくと、急な階段が現れる。 足を滑らせないようにしないと、少しだけ緊張するような階段だ。 その階段をゆっくりと降りていく。

階段の下には、ようこそ と書かれた赤い矢印の看板が立っている。 あの赤い矢印の方角が岩屋なのだと思うと、なんだか嬉しくなりながらさらに降りていく。

赤い矢印の方へ進むと、再び急な階段が現れる。 そこからは海の景色が見えるようになり、下の方には見晴亭というお食事処が見えてくる。 早朝なので営業時間外だったが、いかにも見晴らしがよさそうな場所だ。 江の島といえばしらすが有名だな、そんなことを思いながらさらに階段を降りていく。

海の景色が広がってきた。 片瀬江ノ島海岸が一面に広がっている。 美しい。 富士山も見える。 朝の光に照らされた海を、しばらく眺めていた。

降りていくと、稚児ヶ淵が見えてきた。 看板には、白菊という名の稚児がここから身を投げたという悲しい話が書かれていた。 同時に夕日を一望できる絶景の場所であり、釣り人の名所でもあるらしい。 朝日に照らされた海を見つめながら、いろいろな思いが胸に浮かぶ。

さらに石畳の階段を下りていくと、両脇に赤い手すりのある岩屋橋が見えてくる。 右側には、朝日を浴びてきらきらと広がる片瀬江ノ島海岸。

岩屋橋は左にカーブしていて、その先にどんな景色が広がっているのか、少しわくわくしながら進んでいく。 歩いていくと、左の岩の間から美しいオレンジ色の朝日が差し込み、赤い手すりと重なって、なんとも言えない光景が広がっていた。 あまりにも美しくて写真を撮る。 釣り人がちらほらと竿を出している姿も見えた。

朝日に照らされた朱色の手すりの岩屋橋を渡っていく。 右側には、澄み切った青空と片瀬江ノ島海岸の海、そして富士山。 この時の景色の美しさといったら、言葉では表せないほどだ。 本当に美しい場所に来たのだと心から思い、第一岩屋へ向かって歩いていく。

第一岩屋へ到着すると、まだ営業時間前だったため、一度戻ろうとした。 ふり返ると、さらに絶景が広がっていた。 清々しい青空の下、朱色の手すりの岩屋橋と、朝日のオレンジ色の光と、片瀬江ノ島海岸の海と富士山。 写真を撮るにはこれ以上ないほどの美しさだった。 あまりにも美しくて、しばらくその景色を眺めていた。 そしてまた写真を撮る。

もうこの時点でおなか一杯の贅沢を味わった気分だった。 早朝から寒い中歩いてきた甲斐があったなと心から思う。 むしろこの時のためにここへ来たのではないのかと思うほどの美しさだった。 営業時間外でまだ岩屋へは入れなかったため、この辺りで時間を潰すことにした。 海風は冷たい。 でも日差しは強くて、歩いてきた体は温かい。 何が何だかわからないが、ともかく 最高に美しい。

第一岩屋に入る前に、一つの文章が終わってしまった。 続きは次回、第一岩屋へと向かうところから書いていこう。
