Zojoji

The white overcast sky has small openings where a hint of blue is showing through. The green lawn of Shiba Park is spreading out, and beyond it Tokyo Tower is standing quietly in red. White clouds, and the contrast of red and green, are gently overlapping, letting the boundary between city and nature slowly dissolve. The scene makes my steps pause for a moment, and a photo is taken almost without thinking.

Walking through Shiba Park toward Zojoji, the Taitoku-in Mausoleum Gate appears on the left. Its dignified colors are standing quietly, and the gaze lingers there for a while. On the hip-and-gable roof, golden Aoi crests are softly holding the light. The blue between the clouds is wider than before. Behind the gate, green trees are standing in silence, and the upper part of Tokyo Tower is gently showing its face. The feeling that Zojoji is drawing near is quietly spreading inside.

Passing by the Zojoji Kaikan area, the surroundings of the Sangedatsumon Gate seem to be under construction. Continuing on toward the Daiden, it happens to be the time for some kind of event, and the grounds feel quietly settled. Even so, the Daiden is standing calmly, holding a gentle stillness in its air. From a little distance, looking toward the Daiden, soft light is falling thinly across the wide steps. After that, the path leads to Ankoku-den, where a quiet moment of prayer is offered.

Zojoji is known as a temple that carries on the teachings of Hōnen, the founder of the Jōdo sect. Its founding, however, is attributed not to Hōnen himself, but to the eighth patriarch of the sect, Yūyo Shōsō. The funeral of Tokugawa Ieyasu was held here, and it is said that the graves of six shoguns, including Hidetada, are located within the grounds.

Walking toward the area where the West-facing Sho Kannon Bodhisattva is enshrined, many small Jizō statues are standing quietly in rows. Each figure has a gentle, endearing presence, with red bibs and hats catching the light. People are walking slowly through the space, and the quiet of the place is being tasted with care.

After a while, a path leading to the Mausoleum of the Tokugawa Shoguns comes into view. Following it, the air of the mausoleum is slowly spreading, calm and undisturbed. The stone surfaces seem to hold a long stretch of time, quietly layered there. Standing still for a moment, the visit to Zojoji comes gently to an end.

Leaving Zojoji and returning toward Shiba Park, the stone park name marker and the guide map are resting quietly at the entrance. Behind them, trees are holding a few red flowers, while in front, small yellow and orange blossoms are blooming here and there. Walking through the park, the Peace Tower comes into sight. On the lawn, people lying down are scattered like small points of color, and a peaceful time is flowing through the space.

A little further on, a dark-toned Torii Gate is standing quietly. At its center, a teal plaque with gold lettering reading “Toshogu” is hanging. Beyond the Torii, stone steps continue upward, and on both sides, purple banners bearing the Aoi crest can be seen. Passing gently under the Torii, a clear, dignified stillness is spreading softly across the shrine grounds. At Haiden, a quiet prayer is offered, and the place is left with slow, unhurried steps.

Shiba Park with its view of Tokyo Tower, Zojoji, and Shiba Toshogu— within this small area, a generous stretch of time can be felt all at once. Under the pale overcast sky of early autumn, that time is quietly savored. When autumn deepens, this place will surely show another, slightly different scene.

増上寺

初秋の曇り空の隙間から、ほんのりと青が覗いていた。 芝公園の緑の芝生が広がり、その向こうに赤い東京タワーが静かに立っている。 白い雲に、赤と緑のコントラストが薄く重なり、都会と自然の境界がゆっくりと溶けていた。 その景色にふと足が止まり、思わず写真を撮った。

芝公園を増上寺の方へ歩いていくと、左側に旧台徳院霊廟惣門が見えてきた。 堂々とした色彩が静かに佇んでおり、しばらく見入っていた。 入母屋造の屋根には、金色の葵紋が淡く光を含んでいる。 雲の隙間の青は、さっきよりも広がっていた。 門の背後には緑の木々が静かに立ち、東京タワーの上層が細く顔を出している。 増上寺が近くなってきた気配が、そっと心に広がっていた。

芝公園から増上寺会館のあたりを抜けると、三解脱門の周辺では工事が行われていたようだった。 そのまま大殿へ向かうと、ちょうど何かの催しの時間帯だったらしい。 それでも、大殿は静かに佇み、穏やかな空気を含んでいた。 少し離れた場所から大殿を眺めていると、広い階段に柔らかな光が薄く落ちていた。 その後、安国殿へ向かい、静かに手を合わせた。

増上寺は、浄土宗の宗祖・法然上人の教えを受け継ぐ寺とされている。 開山は法然ではなく、浄土宗第八祖・酉誉聖聰上人によるものと伝わっている。 徳川家康の葬儀が行われ、秀忠をはじめ六人の将軍の墓所が設けられているという。

西向聖観世音菩薩が祀られている一角へ向かうと、たくさんのお地蔵さまが静かに並んでいた。 それぞれの姿が可愛らしく、赤い前掛けや帽子が風を受けている。 人々がゆっくりと歩いている中、その場の静けさをそっと味わっていた。

歩いていると、徳川将軍家墓所へ続く道がふと目に入った。 そのまま進むと、墓所の静かな空気がゆっくりと広がっている。 長い歴史と時間がそこに静かに積もっているように思えた。 しばらく佇んでから、増上寺をゆっくりと後にした。

増上寺を後にして芝公園へ向かう。 芝公園の入口には、石造りの園名標と案内図が静かに置かれていた。 背後の木々には赤い花がところどころ咲いており、手前には黄色やオレンジの小さな花も咲いている。 公園を歩いていくと、平和の塔が見えてきた。 芝生には寝そべっている人の姿がまだらに見え、穏やかな時間が流れていた。

少し進むと、黒っぽい鳥居が静かに立っていた。 鳥居の中央には金色の文字で「東照宮」と書かれた青緑色の扁額が掲げられている。 鳥居の先には石段が続き、両脇には葵紋の文様が入った紫の幟が見える。 鳥居をそっとくぐると、凛とした静けさが境内に薄く広がっていた。 拝殿にて静かに参拝し、ゆっくりとこの場を後にした。

東京タワーの見える芝公園、増上寺、そして芝東照宮。 この一帯で流れている贅沢な時間を、初秋の曇り空の下でゆっくりと味わっていた。 秋が深まれば、また違う光景が静かに姿を見せるのだろう。
