Nezu Shrine

When I first learned about the Bunkyo Azalea Festival, I felt a quiet wish to see its colors for myself. With that gentle anticipation, I decided to visit Nezu Shrine, where the azaleas were said to be in bloom.

Nezu Shrine is an old place connected to Tokugawa Tsunayoshi and Tokugawa Tsunatoyo. Five deities are enshrined here—Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Ōyamakui-no-Mikoto, Hondawake-no-Mikoto, Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto, and Sugawara no Michizane.

The day was covered by a pale overcast sky. Even so, I felt that the bright colors of the azaleas would bloom softly beneath such light. With that thought, I arrived at the station and walked toward the west entrance, one of the shrine’s approaches.

A light beige torii appeared quietly on the right side of the road. Inside the grounds, festival stalls lined the path, and a gentle sense of celebration drifted through the air. The streets leading here had been calm, yet beyond the torii, the sudden liveliness surprised me. Families, travelers, and people walking alone were already enjoying the festival in their own ways.

Along the path, Komagome Inari Shrine stood quietly to the right. Farther ahead, the vivid red Sukibei—an Important Cultural Property—extended along the left side. Through its openings, the Important Cultural Property of Nishi-mon came into view. The white overcast sky, the fresh green of the trees, and the faint colors of the azaleas beyond created a gentle contrast. Even with the steady flow of people, there was a brief moment when the air felt quietly clear.

Soon, the Senbon Torii and Otome Inari Shrine appeared on the right. Behind them, the azalea garden spread out, its reds, pinks, and whites bright enough to make me forget the muted sky. Many people paused, drawn softly toward the colors.

The walking route inside the azalea garden had a long line, so I chose to simply observe from the outside this time. Even so, the presence of the flowers was more than enough.

As I continued, another long line came into view—a line leading toward the Important Cultural Properties of the Karamon, the Haiden, and the Honden. It stretched past the Important Cultural Property of the Sakuramon, over Shinbashi, and toward the Omotesando area. Near the Sakuramon stood the Maidono, its quiet form faintly rising above the movement of the crowd. The length of the line was overwhelming, so I watched from a distance in silence.

By chance, there was no wait at the Senbon Torii, and I walked through at the pace of the crowd. Along the way, the colors of the azaleas, the brief stillness during my visits to Otome Inari Shrine and Komagome Inari Shrine, and the small fox statues standing quietly nearby brought a sense of calm even within the busy flow of people.

The liveliness of the festival seemed to continue even after I left the shrine grounds. The colors of the azaleas, the quiet presence of the Important Cultural Properties, and the soft rise of people’s prayers and excitement felt like a gentle reminder of why this place has drawn so many hearts through so many years.
