Senshu Park — Part 1

There was a moment when I quietly felt the urge to visit Akita. There was no particular reason. I simply wanted to travel somewhere distant and calm.

Akita is known as the land of the Namahage. I could not visit the folklore museum this time, but I hoped to touch the quiet atmosphere that lingers in that region. Akita is also known for its dogs and its rice, names that carry a certain presence as a place to travel to.

The sky was overcast, and the forecast said it would rain in the afternoon. The weather was expected to worsen the following day. From the airplane window, the mountains cast deep shadows, and within that stillness, I sensed something faintly mythical. With that impression in mind, I arrived at Akita Airport.

A bus took me to Akita Station. In the station's rotary, two Akita dog statues sat facing sideways, with “AK♡TA” engraved between them. I paused for a while, looking at their gentle expressions, and took a photograph.

Since rain was expected later, I carried an umbrella and headed toward Senshu Park. It was reassuring that the park was within walking distance from the station. As I walked, the Anamon moat and the Ōtemon moat slowly came into view. From Hirokōji, the road leading to Nakadobashi Street guided me toward the park entrance. From there, the roof of the Akita City Cultural Creation Center could be seen, its round central window giving it a quiet presence even under a white overcast sky.

Nakado‑bashi had a wooden handrail, its simple texture deepening the quietness of the scenery. Crossing the bridge felt as though I had stepped into another time.

Around the middle of Nakadobashi Street, a promenade branched off to the right. A dark gray steel railing lined the entire path, and at the entrance, a sign attached to the railing caught my eye. Continuing straight would lead to the Ninomaruguchi. The sign read “Senshu Park Ōtemon Promenade” in white letters on a dark gray background. Seeing the sign, I decided to walk along the promenade.

On both sides of the path, a broad pond stretched out. In summer, lotus flowers are said to bloom across its surface. I could not see them this time, but even beneath the pale overcast sky, I felt the quiet presence of the season resting there. There were few people around, and it was just right for a calm morning walk.

After walking the length of the promenade, I turned back. At my feet stood a stone marker engraved with “Senshu Park Pocket Park.” From that spot, the entire Ōtemon moat promenade could be seen in a single, quiet sweep.

Behind me stood a small structure with a tiled roof, marked “Akita Chūō Road Emergency Exit.” Beneath it was an information board displaying a map titled “Guide to Senshu Park,” showing the location of the Kubota Castle ruins I was heading toward next.

When I looked up, the rain had not yet begun to fall. Still, the air carried a sense that it could start at any moment. With my umbrella in hand, I began walking slowly along Ōtemon Street, with quiet anticipation in my heart for the scenery that awaited ahead.

Part 1
