Senshu Park — Part 3

A wooden signpost with pointed ends stood quietly before me. The left arrow indicated the Ninomaru Site, and the right pointed toward Iyataka Shrine. After looking at the calm lettering for a moment, I began walking along the path to the right.

Before long, a small bridge appeared. On the left side of its entrance, a tall pine rose toward the sky at an angle close to eighty degrees, its dark green needles gathered softly near the top. On the right side, evergreen azaleas spread low across the ground, and across the pond on the right-center side of the bridge, several straight pines stood in a pale, quiet row. Beyond the bridge on the right, winter‑bare trees with gently drooping branches hung gently from beneath the leaves of the pine I had just passed. Below the bridge, the pond stretched to both sides, its surface resting faintly under the pale overcast sky.

Before stepping onto the bridge, I paused. The scene before me felt like a painting— the tall pine, the still water, the muted winter branches. For a moment I was startled by the height of the pine, but when I looked at the entire view, its presence seemed to hold the landscape together. As the seasons change, this place must reveal different moods of its own. With that quiet thought, I took a photo.

From the middle of the bridge, the winter‑bare trees—some with gently drooping branches, others standing straight beyond them— came quietly into view ahead. I felt that walking here in different seasons would reveal its own quiet beauty. Yet the stillness of this hour, with almost no one around, made the slow walk feel like a small gift.

After crossing the bridge, the Shōtokuhi Monument of Kano Kyokuho stood with dignity before the delicate winter branches of the trees. It is a monument dedicated to Kano Kyokuho, a scholar of Chinese classics from Akita. I looked at it for a while, then continued along the path.

Continuing straight along the main path, a large stone placed across a dry section of the pond quietly connected the walkway like a small earthen bridge. Walking straight ahead, a path branched off to the right. It felt as though a viewpoint might lie beyond that right-hand path, so I followed it at a slow, quiet pace.

Stone steps, each lined with a horizontal row of stones, rose gently before me. After climbing the six steps, a single stone table appeared, surrounded by several rectangular stone seats. In front of it, winter-bare trees spread softly, and a path extended to the left, its way framed by the branches of the winter trees.

Following that leftward path, the cityscape of Akita opened quietly before me. Under the pale overcast sky, the sudden openness of the view felt refreshing. Looking out over the wide landscape, I felt a quiet sense of calm settle within me.

Leaving the spot, I returned to the main path. Above me, a few red camellias bloomed softly, adding a quiet touch of color among the winter-bare trees.

Farther along, I passed a single plum tree, its buds still closed. The stillness of the hour, with almost no visitors, made the slow walk feel peaceful.

I stepped across stones arranged like stepping-stones and continued walking in silence.

Soon, two tall pines appeared on the right, rising toward the sky as if reaching for it. A little farther ahead, a single low plum tree showed its pale buds near my feet.

After walking for a while, I finally reached Iyataka Shrine. Winter-bare trees stood quietly both before and behind the shrine. The pale gray stone torii held four white shide, and between them, soft beige asa-o was tied in place. The shrine stood with a calm, dignified presence.

After a quiet visit, I stepped away from the shrine. I looked up at the sky. The rain had not yet begun to fall. Beneath the winter-bare trees, a quiet sense of gratitude and calm settled gently in my heart.

Part 3
