Senshu Park — Part 4

Under a pale overcast sky, I quietly left Iyataka Shrine behind. The shrine, once rooted in Yabase as Hirata Shrine, honors two figures who shaped the intellectual spirit of Akita—Atsutane Hirata and Nobuhiro Satō. It was later reorganized by the Akita Prefectural Education Association, renamed “Iyataka Shrine” after the words of Meitokukan, and eventually moved to Senshu Park.

As I stepped away from its stillness, a faint clarity lingered in my mind, as if touching the quiet core of Akita's learning had made me feel a little wiser.

From there, I walked along the mountain path toward the site of the Kubota Castle Watchtower. Past the shrine, a fork appeared—one path rising to the left, another continuing straight ahead. A wooden sign marked “Ninomaru Site / Iyataka Shrine” stood before it. I hesitated for a moment, then remembered I had already taken the left path, and gently turned toward the straight mountain trail.

After a short walk, a small opening appeared along the grass-covered slope of the mountain, where a white wooden sign read “Tsuchimon Gate Site.” Winter branches of trees stood faintly behind it, quietly telling me that a gate once stood here. I paused for a moment, then continued on.

The path eventually split again. A wooden sign pointed toward the statue of Lord Satake Yoshitaka, toward the north entrance, and toward the watchtower rising to the left. I chose the left path and walked upward at a slow, steady pace.

Along the way, a small tag marked “Yamabuki” caught my eye. Among the winter branches, soft green buds appeared here and there. The yellow blossoms had not yet emerged, but I felt that, a little later in the season, this slope would be gently colored by their brightness.

Soon the view opened softly to the right, revealing the distant cityscape. I could see the quiet spread of the town far below, its muted presence carrying a faint sense of calm beneath the pale sky.

Farther ahead, a long wooden staircase stretched upward. A pointed wooden sign stood before it, quietly indicating the directions of the watchtower, Iyataka Shrine, and Shōrō. A sense of relief spread through my heart as I realized I had finally arrived, and a small smile rose without effort.

A dark-brown wooden handrail lined the left side of the stairs. Looking up, I saw the roof of the Kubota Castle Watchtower— three tiers faintly visible through the winter‑bare branches. On the right, the winter‑bare branches stood quietly in a row, and I felt that the view from here, too, would change gently with the seasons.

Because I had walked without a map, a small trace of uncertainty brushed my heart from time to time, yet the quiet sense of arrival felt deeper for it. When I looked up, the pale overcast sky still held its light without releasing rain. Carrying a folded umbrella, I felt that watching the afternoon weather while walking was a small adventure in itself.

Part 4
