Senshu Park — Part 5

Under a white overcast sky, I slowly walked up the wooden steps leading toward the Kubota Castle Osumi-yagura. This path was not the main approach but a quiet back route, where almost no one passed. Only the bare branches of the winter trees stood silently along the way.

Ahead of me, slightly to the right, the Osumi-yagura appeared. Even though I was approaching it from behind, its presence felt calm and dignified, and the air grew faintly taut as I drew closer. Winter had already passed, and the early signs of spring lingered softly in the scenery, a quiet shift held within the stillness.

Halfway up the steps, a small open space appeared on my right. It felt like a hidden corner tucked away from the path, and I stepped into it for a moment.

The area was surrounded by evergreen azaleas, and on the left, tall pines gathered their green needles high above. A square wooden bench stood alone, and another bench rested a little farther back. The winter trees around the space created a quiet atmosphere, as if the place had been left gently between seasons.

With no one else there, I looked down through the gaps in the branches. The city of Akita spread faintly beyond the winter trees. Under the soft overcast sky, I could simply rest for a moment, letting the quiet view ease my mind.

When I finally reached the top of the steps, the scene changed all at once. The silent back path gave way to a sudden flow of visitors, and the contrast was striking. I paused for a moment, then continued toward the Osumi-yagura.

After paying the entrance fee, I stepped inside. I walked up the stairs while quietly looking at the displays, and then stepped out onto the outer terrace with its wooden railing. The view from there was, as expected, beautiful. Perhaps because I had come through the quiet back route, the scenery felt even deeper within me.

From the Osumi-yagura, I walked toward the Omotemon Gate and descended the steps. Along the path stood a wooden signboard, pointed at both ends, marked “Osumi-yagura / Oshirasu Site.” Following the direction it indicated, I walked toward the Oshirasu site, where a statue of Satake Yoshitaka stood near the former honmaru grounds. I stopped for a moment and quietly looked at his dignified figure.

To the left, slightly ahead, stood Hachiman Akita Shrine, where Satake Yoshinobu, Yoshitaka, and Yoshimasa are enshrined. Nearby was Yojirō Inari Shrine, known for the legend of Yojirō and its line of red torii. The area was lively with many visitors, so I quietly stepped away.

Although I wasn't able to visit the Satake Historical Museum or the tea house Sen-an this time, the Kubota Castle ruins—designated as a scenic site by the city of Akita— and Senshū Park itself were places where simply walking through them allowed me to feel the depth of their history. The quiet traces of the old castle, nestled among the trees, gently enveloped the time I spent there.

Around that time, the rain began to fall. I passed through the Omotemon Gate (the First Gate), then the Nagasakamon Gate Site (the Second Gate Site), and walked toward the Kuromon Gate Site, leaving Senshu Park behind. By the time I reached the station, the rain had grown stronger. Akita is known for its rice, and with that thought in mind, I stepped into the station building.

千秋公園 ― Part 5

曇り空のなか、久保田城御隅櫓へと向かう木の階段をゆっくりと昇っていった。 正面ではなく裏道にあたるこの道には、人の気配がほとんどなく、 ただ冬木立の枝が静かに立ち並んでいるだけだった。

階段の先には、斜め右前方に御隅櫓の姿が見えていた。 背後から眺めているはずなのに、その佇まいはどこか凛としていて、 近づくほどに空気が薄く張りつめていくように感じられた。 冬木立の季節が終わり、春の気配が薄く漂い始めたこの時期の景色は、 静けさの中にゆるやかな変化を含んでいた。

階段の途中、ふと右手に小さな広場のような場所が現れた。 まるで隠れ家のようにぽっかりと開いたその一角に、そっと足を踏み入れてみた。

周囲はつつじの常緑林に囲まれ、 左側には背の高い松が、緑の葉を上層にふわりとまとめていた。 正方形の木製ベンチがひとつ置かれ、 その奥にももうひとつベンチが見えていた。 冬木立の枝に囲まれたその空間は、 季節の狭間に取り残されたような静けさをまとっていた。

誰もいないその場所で、少しだけ下を眺めた。 冬木立の隙間から、秋田市街地が淡く広がって見えていた。 曇り空の下、静けさの中でこの風景を眺めることができ、 心がゆっくりとほどけていくように感じられた。

そうして階段の頂上へとたどり着いたとき、 景色が突然一変した。 今までの静かな裏道とは対照的に、 そこには観光客の波が広がっていた。 あまりのギャップに思わず立ち止まったが、 そのまま御隅櫓へと向かった。

入場料を払い、櫓の中へ入った。 久保田城にまつわる資料を静かに眺めながら階段を上り、 外側に設けられた高欄付きの外縁部へと出た。 その景色は言うまでもなく素晴らしかった。 静かな裏道を歩いてきたからこそ、 その眺めはより深く心へと届いた。

その後、御隅櫓から表門方面へ向かい、途中の階段を下っていった。 歩道の途中には、両端が尖った形の木の道標が立ち、「御隅櫓　御白洲跡」と記されていた。 その道標が示す御白洲跡の方角へと歩いていくと、 本丸跡付近に佐竹義尭公の銅像があった。 一度立ち止まり、その堂々とした姿を静かに眺めた。

左斜め側には、佐竹義宣・義尭・義和の三柱を祀る八幡秋田神社があった。 そのすぐ近くには、「与次郎伝説」の千本鳥居が続く与次郎稲荷神社があった。 付近は多くの観光客で賑わっていたため、そっとその場を後にした。

佐竹資料館や茶室「宣庵（せんあん）」へは今回は行けなかったが、 秋田市指定名勝である久保田城跡と千秋公園は、歩くだけで歴史の深さを感じさせる風情ある場所だった。

ちょうどその頃、雨が落ちてきた。 表門（一の門）を通り、長坂門跡（二の門跡）を過ぎ、黒門跡方面へ向かい、 千秋公園を後にした。 駅に着く頃には雨脚が強くなっていた。 秋田といえば、お米の土地。 そんなことを静かに思いながら、駅の構内へと入っていった。
