Gokokuji
On a humid summer morning, the sunlight was already carrying a hint that the day would grow hotter. Walking slowly toward Gokokuji, the air of the city seemed to soften, and the presence of the temple began to draw closer.
Gokokuji is said to have been established by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi and his mother, Keishōin. It is said that Ryōken Sōjō, a high priest from Usui Hachimangū in Gunma, was invited to open the temple. Its principal deity, Nyoirin Kannon, appears to be enshrined there quietly.
The main gate, the Niōmon, stood with a dignified weight. The two Kongō Rikishi statues on either side held their powerful stance, and standing before the gate, my heart gently tightened. Passing through the Niōmon, I stepped into the precinct.
The view within was full of quiet elegance. Stone steps leading to the Furo-mon rose straight ahead, and the summer greenery was deep, with the shadows of the trees moving slowly in the warm air. Benches near the entrance seemed to offer a soft rest to those who came to visit. Walking a little further, a pale gray torii appeared on the right, adding a faintly mysterious feeling to the scene.
Climbing the stone steps, a large pine branch spread overhead just before the Furo-mon. It felt as though, in autumn, a beautiful scene would unfold here, and such thoughts passed through my mind as I walked toward the reddish-brown doors of the gate and stepped through. Slowly ascending the steps, I let the image of that future season settle quietly in my thoughts.
Beyond the Furo-mon, six small Jizō statues stood to the right. Further ahead, the Kannon-dō—the main hall—came into view. To the right, a seated Buddha statue appeared calm and gentle, as if quietly watching over all who visited. The succession of historical structures stirred a faint tremor in my heart. At the main hall, I offered a quiet prayer.
On the way back, I walked beyond the six Jizō statues. Ahead, the Yakushi-dō stood in stillness. To the left, small Jizō figures appeared here and there along the path. I stopped before the Migawari Jizō that emerged to my left, and the air around it felt filled with gentle compassion. I remained there for a while, simply standing in that quietness. Further along, the Hitokoto Jizō stood in silence. There, too, I paused, letting the atmosphere settle within. This part of the precinct was secluded, yet held a soft, beautiful stillness.
From the returning stone steps, I looked out over the grounds. The summer trees and the temple buildings stood together as a single, quiet landscape. I found myself wondering how the colors would change with each passing season—spring, summer, autumn, winter— and with that thought, I left Gokokuji behind.
Outside the precinct, along the street in front, several wagashi shops came into view. In the midst of office buildings and the business district, these quietly standing shops brought a small smile to my face. Even within a modern city, their long-kept history and presence felt beautifully preserved.
In the heat and humidity, perhaps my body relaxed too much after seeing such calm scenery. Just beyond the temple grounds, I slipped and fell, leaving a small scrape on my skin. “Are you alright?” At the sound of that voice, the image of merciful deities passed gently through my mind.
