The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace — Part 1
Summer morning air slowly held a gentle brightness. There was a faint sense that the sunlight would grow stronger as the day went on. A steady breeze was blowing, and the humidity remained low. Under a mix of blue sky and a soft overcast sky, the light quietly settled the pace of walking.
When I reached the ticket booth in front of Otemon Gate, there was no one there except the security staff. I asked about the opening time and decided to stroll quietly around the area.
The surface of Ote-bori Moat and Kikyo-bori Moat spread out calmly, holding a thin layer of morning light. Shadows of summer trees and buildings were reflected softly, while leaves stirred in the wind, scattering pale green tones. For a while, I found myself simply gazing at the wide, open scene. From time to time, people out for a jog passed by quietly. Their figures seemed to blend naturally into the morning air.
When I returned to the ticket booth, a line had already formed before the opening. I joined the end of the queue in silence. There were tourists and others in the line, and different kinds of presence mingled together.
By the roadside, a pink rose of Sharon came into view. Its summer color gently eased my mind. After the baggage check, I walked toward the inside of the garden. Stepping through the gate with the flow of the line, my mood quietly lifted.
A broad walkway stretched ahead, with green trees standing on both sides. I walked slowly, looking at the Doshin-bansyo Guardhouse, the Hyakunin-bansyo Guardhouse, and the O-bansyo Guardhouse. Passing the Site of Nakanomon Gate and the Site of Chujaku-mon Gate, the Honmaru Oshibafu Lawn opened out in front of me, covered in green grass. Faced with that expanse, my heart felt a little lighter. People drifted away at their own pace, and a gentle sense of space began to appear.
Further along, a sign for the Orchard of Ancient Fruit Trees came into sight. On the eastern side, illustrations and explanations of Japanese pear, peach, Japanese plum, and citrus fruits were displayed. On the western side, similar drawings and descriptions of persimmon and apple were set out. Old varieties of fruit trees seemed to be planted there, some quietly bearing fruit. I stood for a while, looking at their shapes. It felt as though these were varieties that had been passed down over many years.
Walking through the Wild Grass Island, a single path appeared ahead. Near its entrance, a sign for Fujimi Yagura was placed, and the tower itself could be seen further on. It is said to have been rebuilt after being lost in the Great Meireki Fire. As I drew closer and looked up, the tower stood with a quiet presence, holding long layers of history. On the triangular part of the roof, a faint layer of soft green rested gently, and that color remained in my memory.
I returned to the original path and headed toward the Honmaru area. The sun was slowly moving closer to its position overhead. Under a mix of blue sky and a soft overcast sky, the stretch of lawn continued quietly. In the middle of a great city, the traces of old history and the presence of nature remained just as they were. Spending time standing there felt like a kind of quiet luxury. With the sense that time had slowed almost to a stop, I walked on a little further.
Part 1
