The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace — Part 2

Walking from the Fujimi Yagura toward the Honmaru area, I pass the Orchard of Ancient Fruit Trees once again. Looking up, I notice a tree quietly holding many pale green and soft pink fruits. Several fallen fruits rest at my feet, already past their ripening. A small wooden sign tied to the trunk reads “Kagahan-Zairai.” I linger for a moment, sensing the quiet presence of an old variety, and then move on.

A short walk brings a familiar flower into view. A white rose of Sharon with a soft pink center is blooming gently. Under the sun climbing toward its position overhead, its cool color offers a quiet sense of relief. I recall the pink rose of Sharon I saw earlier near the ticket booth. Continuing forward, I reach an area where the Site of the Matsu no Oroka Corridor and the path toward the Fujimi-Tamon Defence House are located.

Near the tea field, a small path appears, surrounded by trees on a gentle rise. Drawn by its quiet air, I step into the shaded trail. The forest holds a soft coolness, and the leaves above filter the morning sun with a comforting density. Looking down through the trees, the Honmaru O-shibafu (Lawn) appears faintly, its green surface resting in the summer light. Passing over the small rise, I descend slowly.

At the foot of the slope, a bamboo grove comes into view, its cool shade settling the air. Further ahead, the Ishimuro, Stone Cellar emerges quietly. The entrance is dark, the walls built of stone, and grasses grow softly across the roof. A fence surrounds the structure, and although I cannot enter, I remain for a moment, sensing the stillness of the place.

Looking up, a pale overcast sky holds small patches of blue. The Tenshudai stands before me, its presence carrying a quiet weight. Approaching the structure, I read the explanation: the castle tower once stood here, but was never rebuilt after its loss. Only the long passage of time has continued.

White clouds drift across the pale sky, and behind me the city's buildings rise quietly. In front of the fence, the stone base of the Tenshudai is stacked in calm layers, with stone steps on both sides. Beyond them, the Honmaru O-shibafu (Lawn) spreads gently across the open space. In the middle of the city, this quiet place of nature and history rests softly, holding a faint trace of time.

Walking on, I pass the remains of the Ōoku and the Camellia Garden. Along the path, a camellia labeled “Hikaru Genji” stands with a quiet presence. The name feels curious, and I pause for a moment to look at the flower before continuing. This area also leads toward the Ninomaru Grove and the Ninomaru Garden.

Near the Honmaru Rest House, a building houses the Exhibition of the Edo Castle, and inside, a Scale Model of the Edo Castle Keep (Tenshu) is displayed. A small crowd gathers around it, allowing only a brief view. Even so, seeing the form of the old castle leaves a quiet impression before I step away.

In the summer heat, the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace are filled with green scenery. Looking up, the sun has moved high overhead. People arriving and people finishing their walk cross paths gently. It feels as though many small memories and quiet scenes will continue to remain in the hearts of those who visit.

皇居東御苑 — Part 2

富士見櫓から本丸方面へと歩いていく。 再び果樹古品種園の前を通る。 ふと見上げると、黄緑と淡いピンクの実をたくさんつけた木が静かに立っている。 足元には、熟した後の実がいくつも落ちていた。 括りつけられた表札には「カガハンザイライ」と記されている。 なるほど、これがそうなのだと感じながら、その場をそっと後にした。

少し歩くと、どこかで見たことのある花が目に入る。 白い花弁の中心に淡いピンクを含んだムクゲが咲いている。 太陽が真上へと向かう最中に見えた涼しげな色が、心をそっと和らげていた。 発券所の手前で見た道端のピンク色のムクゲのことを思い出す。 そのまま静かに歩を進めていく。 このあたりには、松の大廊下跡や富士見多聞（ふじみたもん）へ続く道も位置している。

茶畑付近へ向かうと、木々に囲まれた小高い丘のような道が見えてくる。 気になり、その小道へと足を向けた。 緑に囲まれた森林の中を、ゆっくりと呼吸を整えながら歩いていく。 朝の陽ざしを覆うように生い茂る葉が、暑い日にはありがたい。 途中で下を眺めると、本丸大芝生が木々の間から涼しげに見えていた。 そうして、木々に包まれた小高い丘をそっと通り過ぎ、ゆっくりと降りていく。

丘を降りた先を歩いていくと、涼しげな竹林が現れる。 さらに進むと、ふっと石室（いしむろ）が姿を見せた。 入口付近は薄暗く、両脇は石造りで、屋根には草が静かに根を張っている。 周囲には柵があり、中へ入ることはできないが、その不思議な空間をしばらく眺めていた。

ふと見上げると、曇り空の隙間に青空が淡く混じっている。 天守台が目の前に見えていた。 まるで海外の遺跡を眺めているような、不思議な感覚が静かに広がる。 天守台へ近づき、説明書きを読む。 かつて天守が建っていたが、その後は再建されず、長い年月が静かに過ぎていった。

白い雲の中に青空が点在し、背後には都会のビル群が立ち並んでいる。 柵の前には石垣が静かに積まれており、その両脇には石段がある。 その奥で本丸大芝生が広がっていた。 大都会の中にありながら、自然に囲まれたこの空間が静かに佇んでいる。 その静けさが、長い歴史の気配を淡く思い起こさせていた。

その後、大奥跡やツバキ園の前を通る。 ツバキ園の道では、「ヒカルゲンジ」と記されたプレートのそばにツバキが咲いている。 面白い名前だと感じながら、しばらくその姿を眺めた。 さらに歩いていく。 このあたりには、二の丸雑木林や二の丸庭園へ続く道もあるようだ。

本丸休憩所の近くには、江戸城の展示の建物がある。 そこでは、江戸城天守復元模型が展示されていた。 そのときは人だかりができていて、そっとしか見ることができなかった。 それでも、昔の江戸城の姿を静かに思い描きながら、その場を後にした。

暑さの中で訪れた皇居東御苑には、夏らしい緑の風景が一面に広がっていた。 ふと空を見上げると、太陽が大分高い位置へと移動している。 今から訪れる人々と、散策を終えた人々がゆっくりと交差している。 これからも多くの人々の心の中に、さまざまな風景や思い出が静かに残されていくのだろう。
