Kanazawa Castle Park — Part 3

I continue walking toward Ninomaru Square, where Kanazawa Castle stands. By now, the cold, the strong wind, and the slanting snow have all started to feel almost irrelevant. All that matters is reaching the top of the stone walls where the Hishi Yagura turret stands, in Ninomaru Square. At this point, the bad weather itself feels like the natural state of things. It's surprising how quickly one grows used to such conditions.

Even so, the path has turned slushy, so I move forward carefully, watching my footing. This is where I need to stay calm. Passing through Shinmaru Square, I eventually arrive at the first gate of Kahoku-mon. When its imposing form suddenly appears before me, I cannot help but let out a quiet “Oh.” On top of the gate rests a tiled roof covered in snow, and on either side, narrow openings called sama are set into the white walls. The combination of white plaster walls and stone walls is beautiful, and the snow-covered roofs stretching out ahead naturally draw my eyes along the route. I pass through the first gate of Kahoku-mon and continue walking along the white wall I saw earlier.

Before long, the deck of an observation platform comes into view. When I glance around, I notice that there are almost no people in this area. With such strong winds and heavy snow, perhaps that is only to be expected. Or maybe it just happens to be the time of day when most of the tourists have already left.

On the way up to the observation platform, I see a sign that reads “Kahoku-mon Second Gate Entrance,” with a red arrow pointing up and to the left. It seems that the direction of the arrow indicates the location of the second gate of Kahoku-mon. I climb the wooden stairs and head toward the observation deck. There is also a gently sloping ramp here, allowing anyone to enjoy the view.

The Hishi Yagura turret now appears even closer, its form blending beautifully with the snowy landscape. It is the perfect spot for taking photos, so I stop and capture the scene. With almost no one else around, I can take my time and savor the view. The wind is still strong and the air is cold, yet somehow even that begins to feel pleasant.

In any case, I am almost there. Feeling a growing sense of excitement, I continue walking. I descend from the observation platform and head in the direction of the Hishi Yagura. Passing through Sannomaru Square, I make my way toward the inner moat.

A spectacular view opens up before me. It is breathtaking. The imposing Gojukken Nagaya and the Hishi Yagura stand in a dignified line along the inner moat. This is exactly the kind of place where one ought to take photos, I think, and I press the shutter again and again. Just then, a patch of blue sky appears between the clouds, and the snowfall briefly comes to a halt. Even so, a solid layer of snow remains on the roofs of Gojukken Nagaya and the Hishi Yagura. After walking all this way in such bad weather, this moment feels almost like a miracle.

When I take photos from a different angle, the sun slips behind the clouds, and the surface of the inner moat, the stone walls, and the white-walled Gojukken Nagaya and Hishi Yagura above them all seem to float quietly into view. The instant I see that scene, I feel from the bottom of my heart that it was truly worth walking all this way.

And so, I will end this part of the walk here. Next time, I will start from Hashizume-mon, reached after passing through the second gate of Kahoku-mon.

金沢城公園 ― Part 3

金沢城のある二の丸広場方面へと向かっていく。 もう寒さとか強風とか斜め積雪とか、どうでもよくなってきた。 ともかく目指すのは、あの菱櫓が建つ城壁の上、二の丸広場だ。 ここまで来ると、この悪天候が当たり前のように感じられてくる。 慣れとは恐ろしいものだ。

とはいえ、歩道はみぞれ状になっているので、足元には気をつけながら歩を進める。 ここは冷静になるべきところだ。 新丸広場を通り過ぎ、河北門 一の門へとたどり着く。 ひょいと姿を現した堂々とした門構えに、おおっと声が漏れる。 門の上には雪をかぶった本瓦葺の屋根があり、両脇の白い壁には狭間（さま）が施されている。 白壁と石垣の組み合わせが美しく、正面には雪をまとった屋根が続き、順路が自然と目に入る。 そのまま河北門 一の門をくぐり抜け、先ほどの白壁に沿って歩いていく。

途中で展望台のデッキが見えてきた。 ふと周りを見渡すと、この辺りはほとんど人がいない。 強風と積雪なのでそんなものだろう。 または、ほとんどの観光客がちょうど去った時間帯だったからかもしれない。

展望台へ上る途中の看板には「河北門 二の門入口」と書かれ、赤い矢印が左上を指している。 どうやら矢印の方向が河北門 二の門らしい。 木製の階段を上り、展望台へ向かう。 ここにはスロープもあり、誰でも景色を楽しめるようになっている。

菱櫓がさらに近くなり、雪景色と溶け合うように美しい姿を見せていた。 ちょうど良い撮影スポットだったので写真を撮る。 ほとんど人がいなかったので、ゆっくりと景色を味わうことができた。 相変わらず強風で寒いが、それすらも心地よく感じてくる。

ともかく、もうすぐだ。 ワクワクしながら歩を進める。 展望台を降り、菱櫓の方面へ向かっていく。 三の丸広場を抜け、内堀へと向かう。

絶景が広がっていた。 これは凄い。 圧巻の五十間長屋と菱櫓が、内堀沿いに堂々と続いている。 これこそ写真を撮るべき場所だと思い、夢中でシャッターを切る。 ちょうど雲の間から青空がのぞき、積雪も一時的に止んでいた。 とはいえ、五十間長屋と菱櫓の屋根にはしっかりと雪が残っている。 悪天候の中ここまで歩いてきた自分には、この瞬間が奇跡のように思えた。

別角度から写真を撮ると、太陽が雲に隠れ、内堀の水面と石垣、その上に建つ白壁の五十間長屋と菱櫓が静かに浮かび上がっていた。 その光景を見た瞬間、本当にここまで歩いてきてよかったと心の底から思った。

というわけで、今回はここまで。 次は、河北門 二の門を抜けた先にある橋爪門からのスタートだ。
