Kanazawa Castle Park — Part 8

Walking past the entrance to the Honmaru Forest and through the iron gate, I noticed a narrow path stretching quietly to the left. Curious about where it might lead, I followed it for a while.

Before long, I sensed a silver world opening up ahead of me. This was it. The moment that thought crossed my mind, I found myself walking faster, almost without thinking.

Under the overcast sky, I stepped briskly—crunch, crunch—through an open space covered in snow. A blanket of pure white snow spread out in all directions, with almost no footprints. There was no one else around.

A quiet joy welled up inside me, and I began leaving my own footprints, one step at a time. Perhaps the astronauts who first set foot on the moon felt something like this. Thinking such things, I walked faster, eager to see what kind of view awaited me further ahead.

It seemed that this area was the former site of the Inui Yagura turret. At the center stood the brown stone base of the old turret platform, a quiet reminder of the structure that once rose here.

The scenery that unfolded beyond it was breathtaking once again. The Hishi Yagura, the Gojukken Nagaya, the Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura, and the entrance to Hashizume-mon all appeared closer than when I had seen them earlier from near the Sanjikken Nagaya.

A vast, beautiful snowscape stretched out before me. I stopped walking, simply stood there, and let the view sink slowly into my eyes.

Near the center of the long wooden railing that lined the viewing area, I noticed a silver-framed sign quietly standing there. I brushed the snow away with my gloved hand, but the text remained half-hidden beneath the snow. Unable to read much of it, I simply gazed out over the entire expanse of Kanazawa Castle.

From the right edge of the viewing line, near the corner of the railing, I looked up at the sky. A pale orange morning sun, veiled by thin clouds, softly tinted the surrounding sky in warm shades of orange, gently illuminating the snowy landscape below.

In the foreground stood a bare winter cherry tree, its branches exposed to the cold air. Something about this contrast was so beautiful that I instinctively raised my camera and took a photo.

Far in the distance, I could faintly make out the snow-covered townscape of Kanazawa. For a brief moment, it felt as though a small fragment of the city’s long history had revealed itself.

As I moved closer to the railing on the right, I saw a forest spreading out beneath the soft orange light of the sun. And then, I suddenly came back to myself. Ah, that’s right. This was still only a stop along the way.

With that thought, I turned back, casting a few lingering glances at the magnificent view around the Hishi Yagura, the Gojukken Nagaya, the Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura, and the entrance to Hashizume-mon.

All right, time to return to the Honmaru Forest. Leaving a new line of footprints in the snow on my way back, I quietly took my leave of the Inui Yagura ruins.

金沢城公園 ― Part 8

本丸の森の入口からさらに歩き、鉄門を過ぎる。 ふっと、左側に細い道が伸びているのが見えた。 何だろう？と思い、その道をしばらく歩いていく。

すると、視界の先に、銀世界が一面に広がっていくのを感じた。 これは──。 そう思った瞬間には、もう夢中で歩を進めていた。

曇り空の下、一面に雪が積もった広場の中を、ザクッ、ザクッと速足で進んでいく。 真っ白な雪が一面に広がり、足跡がほとんどない。 しかも、誰もいない。

嬉しくなって、自分の足跡を一歩ずつ残しながら歩いていく。 月へ初めて到着した宇宙飛行士たちは、きっとこんな気持ちだったのではないだろうか。 そんなことを考えながら、その先の景色が早く見たくて、さらに速足で歩を進めていく。

このあたりはどうやら、戌亥（いぬい）櫓跡のようだ。 中央には、かつて戌亥櫓を支えていた櫓台の石垣が、茶色い基壇となって静かに残っている。

その先に見えた景色は、またしても息をのむほど美しかった。 「菱櫓」「五十間長屋」「橋爪門続櫓」「橋爪門の入口」などが、 先ほど三十間長屋のあたりから見た時よりも、ぐっと近くに感じられる。

そして、ただただ美しい雪景色が一面に広がっていた。 立ち止まり、この絶景をひたすらじっと眺め、そっと目に焼き付けておく。

足元を見ると、木製の柵が長く続く展望ラインの中央あたりに、 銀縁の案内板が静かに設置されているのを見つけた。 雪をそっとどけてみたものの、文字は半分ほど雪に隠れたままだった。 結局あまり読めず、ただ静かに金沢城全体の景色を眺めていた。

ふと、展望ラインの右端、柵の角のあたりから空を見上げる。 雲にうっすら覆われたオレンジ色の朝日が、雲の周辺を柔らかいオレンジ色に染め上げ、 雪景色をさらに優しく照らし出していた。

その手前には、枝をすべて落とした桜の冬木立が、静かに立ちすくんでいる。 このコントラストが何とも美しく、思わずここでも写真を撮ってみる。

視界の先には、雪景色の金沢の町並みが、うっすらと姿を見せている。 金沢の長い歴史が、ほんの少しだけ見え隠れしたような気がした。

さらに右側の柵の方へと近づいていくと、柔らかいオレンジ色の太陽の下に、 深い森林が広がっているのが見えた。 そこで、ふと我に返る。 あ、そうだった。ここはまだ途中経過だった。

そう思いながら、「菱櫓」「五十間長屋」「橋爪門続櫓」「橋爪門の入口」周辺の絶景を、 何度か振り返りつつ、その場を後にする。

さてと、本丸の森へと戻ろうか。 積雪の中、戻りの足跡をひとつずつ残しながら、戌亥櫓跡を静かに後にしていった。
