Edogawa Park and Chidorigafuchi

Before the petals began to fall, there was a quiet wish to see the cherry blossoms at night. As the evening air slowly settled over the city, the path led toward Edogawa Park with quiet anticipation.

Above the park, pink and white lanterns were lined up in a gentle row. Even though it was during the sakura festival, the flow of people felt calm, as if the liveliness of the daytime had remained only as a soft afterimage. The cherry trees, lit by the lamps, stood quietly under the dimming sky.

The sky had not yet turned fully into night, and a faint blue still lingered. Against that pale blue, the blossoms were beginning to shift into a softer shade of pink. Unlike the vivid colors of midday, the evening light wrapped the flowers in a quiet tone, giving them a delicate shadow.

Walking on while gazing at the Somei Yoshino trees, the contrast between the blossoms touched by the lights and those reaching toward the fading blue sky slowly overlapped in the field of view. On the surface of the Kanda River, fallen petals were scattered like small stars, dropping a gentle light onto the darkening water. The evening sky, the layers of buildings, the silhouettes of the cherry trees, and the reflections on the river— all of these seemed to blend together, forming a single, dreamlike scene.

Reaching Edogawa Bridge, the lit cherry trees stretched along the riverbank. The blue of the evening sky, the city lights, and the soft pink of the blossoms met and intertwined, while far in the distance a faint trace of sunset remained near the horizon. Beneath the expressway, the Kanda River flowed quietly, holding the reflections of buildings and the shadows of the cherry trees on its surface.

The cherry blossoms, glowing in a pale golden light, and the petals resting on the water left a strong impression.

For a while, that beautiful scenery was simply watched in silence, and photographs were taken. The people standing there, too, would surely appear from afar as if they were quietly blending into the landscape. Then Edogawa Park was left behind.

On the way to Chidorigafuchi, the route seemed uncertain at times, yet following the flow of people made the path clearer. By then, the sky had grown darker, and the time for true night blossoms had arrived. Approaching Chidorigafuchi, many people were already gathered along the moat. It felt as though not only the daytime blossoms, but the night blossoms as well, continued to draw people toward them.

Walking along Chidorigafuchi, the water of the moat was visible beside the path, and the way led into Chidorigafuchi Park. Ahead, the lights of the National Diet Building and Tokyo Tower were quietly shining beyond the line of trees. Above, a soft mix of gray and muted pink spread across the sky, and in some places the streetlights gently illuminated the branches. There was no grand illumination, yet the blossoms floating in the night air were already enough to create a sense of quiet enchantment.

The scene felt almost like a monochrome photograph, and within that stillness, the camera was raised from time to time to capture the view. A small observation area appeared, where the National Diet Building and Tokyo Tower could be seen beyond the moat, and the path continued past it. After walking for a while, it felt natural to turn back toward the starting point.

On the way back, the same observation spot appeared once more. At that moment, the lights along Chidorigafuchi suddenly came on. Just as the thought arose to take a photograph, the illumination went out, and in that brief surprise, there was a pause. Soon the lights returned again, revealing that the moat and the trees were being lit at intervals.

The green slopes of the earthwork, the quiet water of the moat, and the cherry trees standing on the right side of the view were all held together by the distant lights of the National Diet Building and Tokyo Tower. The illuminated moments and the unlit moments were both watched for a while, as people around stood with their cameras raised, and it felt natural to join them and take photographs in the same way.

Slowly, the quiet presence of the night blossoms was absorbed, and Chidorigafuchi Park was left behind. Even with the warmth of people still lingering in the air, the full-bloom cherry trees floating in the dim sky simply stood there in silence. Looking up at them, a gentle, quiet happiness spread softly within.
