Koami Shrine

While traveling, you sometimes encounter unexpected moments or small surprises. This trip began with exactly that kind of experience. Japan is filled with countless shrines and temples, and not knowing which one to visit, I first asked an AI for suggestions. Several places came up, but I couldn't decide, so I asked, “Which one do you recommend the most?” The AI chose Koami Shrine, so I decided to follow its lead—this was going to be a small Tokyo trip guided entirely by AI.

Since I was a bit lost when I arrived at the station, I asked a station attendant for directions, and he kindly showed me the way. Following the directions, I walked into a side street, and a quiet corner suddenly appeared within an area lined with buildings. Then, the moment I turned the corner, a small shrine stood gracefully on the right-hand side. That was Koami Shrine.

I thought, “Oh, here it is,” but immediately sensed something unusual. In front of the worship hall, there was an unexpectedly long line of people. It was a holiday afternoon, but I still hadn't imagined anything like this. Security staff were guiding the line, which stretched far down the street. People were taking photos from a distance, and I took a few myself.

Near the line, I noticed staff members offering amulets and talismans of Benzaiten. With a shrine this popular, it felt like a place where good fortune naturally gathers. Places filled with people tend to draw even more people, creating a lively atmosphere that lifts your mood. Koami Shrine seemed to be one of those places that leave visitors smiling.

I decided to look for the end of the line, wondering for a moment if there was a famous shop nearby or some kind of event happening. But no—these people were all waiting to visit Koami Shrine. I had no idea it was this popular, and it felt almost mysterious that I had ended up here by chance.

I thought the line ended before the crosswalk, but there were more people waiting on the other side as well. A sign and a staff member were informing people that the end of the line was further ahead. I had almost joined the line halfway by mistake.

Even after crossing the street, the line continued, turning left at the corner and stretching even farther. I finally reached the end, but then I paused. How long would this take? Realizing it might be hours, I decided to give up on visiting this time.

On my way back, I walked through the quiet streets toward the main road. The word “Kabukiza” caught my eye, and I felt a little curious, but I decided to end the trip there. Unexpected moments truly are unexpected when you have no prior knowledge. Thinking about that, I walked down the stairs toward the station gates, with the word “Kabukiza” lingering in my mind. I told myself I would come back another day, when I had more time.

小網神社

旅をしていると、思いがけない場面に出くわしたり、ちょっとしたアクシデントが起こることがある。 今回の旅は、まさにそんな出来事から始まった。 日本には神社仏閣が数えきれないほどあるが、どこへ行けばいいのか分からない自分は、まずAIに候補を聞いてみた。 いくつか挙がった中で迷ってしまい、「一番のおすすめは？」と尋ねたところ、AIが選んだのは小網神社だった。 今回は、AIが導いた都内の小さな旅である。

駅に着いて少し迷っていたので、案内係の方に道を尋ねると、丁寧に教えてくれた。 その道順に従って進んでいくと、路地に入り、ビルが立ち並ぶエリアの中に、ふっと静かな一角が現れた。 そして道路を曲がった瞬間、右側の角に凛と佇む小さな神社が姿を現した。それが小網神社だった。

「おお、ここか」と思ったのも束の間、すぐに違和感を覚えた。 拝殿の前には、まさかの大行列ができていたのだ。 祝日の昼間ということもあったが、ここまでとは想像していなかった。 警備員が列を誘導し、道の先までずらっと続く行列を見て思わず唖然とした。 離れた場所から写真を撮る人たちもいて、自分もちょっとだけ撮ってみた。

ふと見ると、参列の近くでは弁財天様のお札や御守の案内をしている関係者の方がいた。 これだけ大人気の神社なら、いかにも運気が上がりそうだ。 人々が集まる場所というのは、そもそも人を惹きつけ、心をワクワクさせ、そして気分良く帰っていく、そんな場である。 景気のいいところに人は寄ってくるし、元気ももらえる。小網神社は、まさに人々を笑顔にさせる場所のようだった。

せっかくなので並んでみようと最後尾を探すと、初詣でもないのに、近くに行列のできる店でもあるのか、あるいは何かのイベントでもあるのかと一瞬目を疑った。 しかし、まぎれもなく彼らは小網神社の参拝者たちだった。 ここまで大人気の神社だとは知らず、自分がここにたどり着いたことが不思議でならなかった。

横断歩道の手前で列が終わりかと思いきや、横断歩道の向こう側にも人が並んでいた。 「最後尾はまだ先です」という警備員の案内と看板が目に入る。 危うく途中で並びかけるところだった。

横断歩道を渡ってさらに歩くと、行列はまだ続き、角を左に曲がった先にもずらっと人が並んでいた。 「一体何事だ？」と驚きながら最後尾にたどり着いたものの、ふと冷静になった。 これ、何時間待つんだろう……。 そう思った瞬間、今回は参拝を諦めることにした。

帰り道、再び静かな街並みを抜けて大通りへ向かう。 途中で「歌舞伎座」の文字が目に入り、少し気になったが、今回はここまでの旅とした。 想定外の出来事というのは、前知識のない自分にとって本当に想定外だ。 そんなことを思いながら、駅の改札へ向かう階段を下りていき、歌舞伎座の文字が脳裏をよぎる中、「ここはまたゆっくり来よう」と思い、この場を後にした。
