Nogi Jinja

When I asked an AI about quiet Jinja in the city, I learned that there was a place holding a gentle stillness within urban streets. Checking the access, I found that it was close to the station. With a slight sense of surprise, I decided to head toward Nogi Jinja.

The morning sky was a pale overcast sky. Cherry blossoms were in full bloom at that time of year. The train was moderately crowded, and I continued toward Nogizaka Station.

I had heard that the Jinja stood near the top of the subway stairs. Climbing the steps, I felt a brief moment of uncertainty, but turning left, the shrine appeared almost immediately. It truly was close to the station. A quiet presence seemed to rest within the city, and a soft mix of surprise and relief settled in.

A white torii stood quietly. The darkened plaque read “Nogi Jinja,” and beneath it, shimenawa and shide were visible. To the right, a full-blooming shidare-zakura held its pale color. A gentle slope stretched beside the stone steps leading into the grounds.

At the front of the stone steps, a square votive ema inscribed with the character “horse” came into view. On each side of the ema, a single sake barrel stood quietly, and beside them, a signboard reading “Jinja with a connection to horses” rested in silence. I wondered about this connection as I slowly walked deeper into the grounds.

Nogi Jinja was created to preserve the spirit of Nogi Maresuke and his wife Shizuko, and has been protected by the hands of the people ever since. Their act of following Emperor Meiji in death drew countless visitors to the Nogi residence, as I later learned. Nogi Maresuke was known as a military figure who lived and fought alongside horses, and the presence of “horse” within the Jinja quietly revealed its meaning.

Cherry trees were blooming within the grounds, their colors floating softly beneath the pale overcast sky. The space was small yet carried a dignified air. To the left, the second torii and the red torii of Akasaka Oji Inari Jinja could be seen gently. A quiet stillness spread through the area, and with almost no crowds, the morning moved at a slow and gentle pace.

Amid the surrounding trees, the straight-lined, house-like Haiden came into view. Its quiet presence held my gaze for a while. I offered a silent prayer before it.

A path extends quietly to the right behind the Haiden. Following it, Seishō Jinja came into view. I remained there for a while, standing within its dignified stillness.

As I made my way back toward the Haiden, the second torii quietly appeared on my left. I passed through the red torii of Akasaka Oji Inari Jinja. That part of the grounds rose slightly, and a small shrine stood quietly atop the gentle mound. I lingered there for a moment, and then left Nogi Jinja.

The quiet of the morning allowed a slow, unhurried time. Visiting a place of stillness within the city felt like stepping into a pocket of gentle luxury, despite its closeness to the station. On the way back, I recalled the beauty of the shidare-zakura, and quietly departed from the scene.

乃木神社

なんとなく AI に神社を尋ねてみたとき、 都会の中に静けさを含んだ場所があると知った。 アクセスを調べると、駅から近いらしい。 その距離感に少し驚きながら、乃木神社へ向かうことにした。

当日は曇り空の朝。 桜が満開を迎えている頃でもあった。 電車内の混雑はほどほどで、 そのまま乃木坂駅へと向かった。

地下鉄の階段を昇り切ったあたりにあると聞いていた。 階段を昇っていくと、ふと迷うような感覚があったが、 左側へ進むとすぐに乃木神社が見えてきた。 本当に駅から近かった。 都会の中に静けさがそっと置かれているようで、 その佇まいに、驚きと安堵が同時に含まれてきた。

白い一の鳥居が静かに立っている。 黒みを帯びた扁額に「乃木神社」と記され、 その下には注連縄と紙垂が見えている。 右側には満開の枝垂桜が淡く咲いていた。 境内へ続く石段の左側には、ゆるやかなスロープが伸びている。

石段の正面には「馬」と書かれた正方形の奉納絵馬が見えていた。 奉納絵馬の両脇には、奉納酒樽が一樽ずつそっと並び、 その左横には「馬とゆかりの乃木神社」と書かれた文字の板が静かに佇んでいる。 ここは馬とゆかりがあるのだろうか。 そんなことを思いながら、ゆっくりと境内へ歩を進めていった。

乃木神社は、乃木希典（のぎ まれすけ）と静子夫人の精神を守るために生まれ、 国民の手で守られ続けてきた場所だという。 明治天皇に殉じた出来事をきっかけに、 乃木邸を訪れる人々が絶えなかったという話を後に知った。 乃木希典は、馬と共に戦った軍人として知られているらしく、 境内の「馬」の気配はその象徴なのだと静かに理解していった。

境内には桜が咲いていて、 曇り空の下でも満開の色が淡く浮かんでいた。 こじんまりとした空間に、凛とした空気が流れている。 左側には二の鳥居と赤坂王子稲荷神社の赤い鳥居がそっと見えていた。 静けさが一帯に広がり、 混雑のない時間帯だったこともあり、 ゆったりとした朝の気配が流れていた。

森林に囲まれた中、住宅のような直線的な拝殿が目に留まった。 その静かな佇まいに、しばらく見とれていた。 拝殿の前でそっと参拝をした。

拝殿から右側の奥へと続く道がある。 歩いて行くと、正松神社（せいしょうじんじゃ）が見えてきた。 凛とした静けさの中で、しばらく佇む。

やがて拝殿へ戻る道に向かうと、 その左手に二の鳥居がそっと姿を見せる。 赤坂王子稲荷神社の赤い鳥居をゆっくりとくぐり抜ける。 境内のこの一角は、地形がわずかに盛り上がっていて、 小さな丘の上に社が静かに佇んでいる。 その静けさの中でしばらく立ち止まり、 そうして乃木神社を後にした。

朝の静かな時間帯だったこともあり、 ゆっくりとした時間を味わうことができた。 都会の中の静けさをふらりと訪れるひとときは、 駅近であることを忘れるほどの余白を含んでいた。 帰り道に見えた枝垂桜の美しさを思い返しながら、 そっとその場を離れた。
