Gokurakuji
The morning sky was a soft overcast sky, yet the hydrangeas of Hasedera were quietly glowing in gentle colors, softly stopping the steps of those who passed through the temple grounds. After leaving the serene atmosphere of Hasedera, I headed toward the Great Buddha of Kotoku-in.
At a small crossroads, I paused for a moment, looking around for a sign that might point the way. A wagashi shop stood nearby, and I quietly asked for directions. “It’s straight ahead,” the shopkeeper said softly. I thanked her and began walking.
Following the path, the Great Buddha of Kotoku-in appeared more easily than expected. After paying the admission fee, I stepped into the grounds. The Buddha’s calm expression seemed to watch over everyone with a gentle, unwavering presence. A group of schoolchildren had arrived, their lively voices blending softly into the air, creating a warm and peaceful atmosphere.
I found the small entrance for the interior viewing and placed a fifty-yen coin before stepping inside. In the quiet dimness, the inner structure of the Buddha emerged faintly, as if time were moving at a slower pace.
When I left the grounds, I passed visitors who were just arriving, and felt once again how this place continues to draw people toward its quiet presence.
I returned to the crossroads. The wagashi shop already had a small line of customers, and more people were heading toward Hasedera. The stillness of the morning was slowly shifting into the rhythm of sightseeing.
Soon the Enoden Hase Station came into view. I wondered whether to walk to Gokurakuji, but decided to take the train for a single stop.
Stepping off at Gokurakuji Station, I found a single road stretching quietly ahead. Unsure of which direction to take, I watched as most people naturally turned left. I followed that gentle flow and walked for a while.
Eventually, on the left side of the tracks, Gokurakuji appeared—a temple standing quietly, almost hidden. Its presence felt like a small, quiet retreat embraced by greenery, a sharp contrast to the grandeur of the Great Buddha. It blended into the residential streets with a subdued, almost secretive charm. A faint smile rose on my face, as if I had stumbled upon something unexpected and quietly beautiful.
Along the way, I found a sign explaining Gokurakudō Tunnel. From Sakurabashi Bridge, the arch of the tunnel is said to hold two keystones at its crown. Crossing the bridge with its red railings, I turned left and soon saw Gokurakuji on the right.
It seemed that those who had walked left from the station were heading somewhere else, for the temple grounds were nearly empty. A clear, quiet air drifted through the space, well matched with the soft overcast sky of the morning.
I offered a quiet prayer and stepped back out. Just then, a few visitors were entering, as if the temple were slowly waking to the day.
For a brief moment, I had been allowed to share the stillness of Gokurakuji—a small piece of paradise that lingered gently in the heart.
