Kamakura-Kodō

Passing through the Third Torii, the quiet line of early-summer greenery along Wakamiya Ōji came into view. I stepped onto the raised pathway of the Dankazura and stood for a moment, simply looking at the green leaves above me. The sky was overcast, yet the morning air felt clear, and the light fell softly over the street.

Wakamiya Ōji is said to be divided into three sections. From the First Torii to the Second, the road stretches toward Yuigahama, close to the sea. From the Second Torii to the Third, the Dankazura runs straight through a long avenue of cherry trees. And from the Third Torii to the entrance of Tsurugaoka Hachimangū lies the final approach to the shrine. On this day, I had walked from Kamakura Station through Komachi-dōri to reach the shrine, so my return followed the route in reverse. Even so, I did not walk the seaside section between the First and Second Torii this time.

As I stepped onto the Dankazura, I felt the quiet touch of early-summer air. The morning stillness lingered beneath the cherry trees, and I walked slowly along the narrow path. From time to time, I looked back. The red Third Torii stood calmly among the green, its color clear even beneath the soft overcast sky.

By the time I reached the end of the Dankazura, the red Second Torii appeared ahead, quietly in place. Passing beneath it, I found two large stone guardian dogs standing on either side. I turned once more to look back at the avenue of cherry trees along Wakamiya Ōji. In the soft light of the overcast morning, the street carried a quiet sense of composure, and I wondered how beautiful it must be when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.

Near Kamakura Station, I hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to take the Enoden. It was hydrangea season, and my next destination was Hasedera. I looked up at the pale overcast sky. I decided to walk.

The signs along the way made the route easy to follow. After some time, I reached a bus stop named Rokujizō-mae. As the name suggested, a black banner reading “Yuigahama Rokujizō-son” stood on the right side of the road. Just beside it, six small Jizō statues stood quietly in a row, each wearing a red cap and a white bib with delicate patterns. Their gentle presence brought a small smile to my face.

Farther along the road, hydrangea bouquets were tied to utility poles here and there. Pink, blue, purple, and other soft colors appeared in clusters, a charming touch that softened the atmosphere of the street. It felt as though the path itself was quietly guiding me toward Hasedera.

Before long, the temple roof appeared on a small hill ahead. The quiet sense of arrival in that moment remains with me even now. I bought an admission ticket from the machine and stepped into the grounds. The slope of blooming hydrangeas was calm, the colors layered gently across the hillside, holding the gaze of anyone who stopped to look. As I walked through the temple, I thought back on the path I had taken, and quietly took in the beauty of the morning.

鎌倉古道

三の鳥居を抜けると、若宮大路の両側に初夏の緑が静かに続いていた。 段葛の上に立ち、緑の葉をしばらく眺める。 曇り空ではあったが、朝の空気は澄んでいて、光が柔らかく落ちていた。

若宮大路は三つの区間に分かれているという。 由比ガ浜へと続く一の鳥居から二の鳥居までの海側の道。 段葛と桜並木が続く二の鳥居から三の鳥居までの区間。 そして、三の鳥居から鶴岡八幡宮の境内へと向かう参道。 今回は鎌倉駅から小町通りを抜けて八幡宮へ向かったため、帰り道はその逆を辿ることになった。 とはいえ、由比ガ浜へと続く一の鳥居から二の鳥居までの海側の道は今回は通らなかったが。

段葛に足を踏み入れると、初夏の風を静かに感じることが出来た。 朝の静けさが残る桜並木の下を、ゆっくりと歩いていく。 ときどき振り返ると、赤い三の鳥居が緑の中に静かに立っていた。 曇り空の下でも、その鮮やかさははっきりと目に映った。

段葛を歩き終える頃、赤い二の鳥居が静かに佇んでいた。 鳥居を抜けると、両脇に大きな狛犬の石碑が置かれている。 その場で一度振り返り、若宮大路の桜並木を眺めた。 曇り空の柔らかな光の中で、並木道はどこか落ち着いた気配をまとい、桜の季節にはどれほど美しいのだろうと静かに感じた。

鎌倉駅の近くまで戻り、江ノ電に乗るかどうか迷った。 紫陽花の季節で、次の目的地は長谷寺だった。 空を見上げると、薄い雲が広がっている。 歩いてみよう、と静かに決めた。

道案内の標識がところどころにあり、迷うことはなかった。 しばらく歩くと、六地蔵前というバス停が見えた。 その名の通り、少し進むと「由比ガ浜 六地蔵尊」と書かれた黒地の幟（のぼり）が右手に立っていた。 そのすぐそばに六地蔵尊が静かに並び、赤い帽子と白地に模様の入った涎掛けを身につけて佇んでいる。 その愛らしい姿に、思わず微笑みがこぼれた。

さらに歩くと、電柱に紫陽花の花束がところどころに飾られていた。 ピンク、青、紫など、さまざまな色が重なり、可愛らしい演出に道の空気がふっと柔らかくなる。 長谷寺が近いことを静かに知らせてくれるようだった。

やがて、小高い山の上に長谷寺の屋根が見えた。 その瞬間の小さな感動は、今でも薄れずに残っている。 券売機で入場料を支払い、境内へ進む。 紫陽花の咲く斜面は静かで、色とりどりの花が重なり合い、初夏の空気の中で見る者の心をそっとつかみ続けていた。 歩いてきた道のりを思い返しながら、その美しさを静かに味わった。
